  • At the 41st session of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm, a member of the IOC named Doctor Gruss, submitted a report suggesting the celebration of Olympic Day. The idea propagating the event was to increase awareness and participation in the international games.

  • Submitted in 1947, the report was discussed and the suggestions were finally implemented in 1948 at the 42nd IOC session in St Moritz. The day was decided as June 23 to commemorate the founding of the International Olympic Committee at Sorbonne, Paris in 1894.

  • Under the leadership of Sigfrid Edstrom, who was the president of the IOC at that time, the first International Olympic Day was celebrated on June 23, 1948.

It highlights the contribution and role of public service in the development of all sectors around the world. The origin of the UN Public Service day goes back to December 20, 2002, when the General Assembly selected June 23 as Public Service Day after adopting a resolution 57/277. With an aim to give the day its recognition, the UN established the UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) programme in 2003, which was later reviewed in 2016. This was done to align the day with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.


Lisa Sthalekar becomes first female president of FICA

Former Australia cricketer, Lisa Sthalekar has become the first female president of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA), the sport’s international player’s association. Her appointment was made at a meeting of the organisation’s executive committee in Switzerland, the first in-person meeting since the start of the Covid pandemic. Sthalekar joins a shortlist of former cricketers including Barry Richards, Jimmy Adams and Vikram Solanki to have held the post of FICA president.

Coursera Global Skill Report 2022: India ranked 68th

The Global Skills Report (GSR) 2022 by Coursera states that India’s proficiency in data science has reduced from 38% in 2021 to 26% in 2022, leading to a 12-rank drop. In terms of overall skills proficiency, India has slipped 4 places to be ranked 68th globally and 19th in Asia. However, the report reveals that India has improved its technology proficiency levels from 38 percent to 46 percent, improving its position by six spots.

About the report:

The report is based on the data collected from over 100 million Coursera users from more than 100 countries who learned a new skill during the past year. The report benchmarks three of the most in-demand skill areas driving employment in the digital economy – business, technology, and data science.

Key points:

  • West Bengal leads the Indian states in terms of skills proficiency with the state showing the highest levels of digital skills proficiency in the country. Andhra Pradesh is among the top three performing states with high proficiency in business and technology skills.

  • For the second year in a row, Switzerland had the highest-skilled learners followed by Denmark, Indonesia, and Belgium.

Agneepath Scheme 2022- All Details & Latest Updates

Agneepath Scheme

The government of India has announced the Agneepath scheme for the recruitment of the youth of India in the Indian Armed Forces. Through this scheme, the younger population of the country is encouraged to take the military as a carrier with a high pay scale. The Agneepath scheme allows the candidates to serve in Indian Armed Forces for four years. The selected candidates in the Agneepath scheme will be known as Agniveers.

The government has announced to recruit about 46000 Agniveers this year. The recruitment is divided into two parts in which up to 25000 Agniveers will be recruited in the first half of December and the remaining Agniveers will be recruited by the first half of February 2023. 10% of the vacancies are reserved for the recruitment in CAPFs and Assam Rifles for the Agniveers, as per the announcement by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)

Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal tweeted on Tuesday, that the Haryana government assures job opportunities for the Agniveers who will serve the nation for four years. In his tweet, he said that “Agniveers who will come back after serving the nation for four years shall be given guaranteed jobs.”

What is the Agneepath scheme 2022?

Agneepath scheme was introduced by the government of India to introduce a new human resource management scheme for the Indian armed forces. It is believed that Agneepath’s scheme will give a new image to the Indian armed forces with younger Agniveers on the frontline. Under the scheme, the Agniveers will be allowed to serve the Indian armed forces for 4 years. After the completion of 4 years of service 25% of the Agniveers will be selected for the permanent commission for further 15 years based on merit and Organisation needs. The rest will be released from the armed forces with a good amount of Seva Nidhi. Agnivesh enrolled under the Agneepath scheme will be governed by the army act 1950.

Agneepath scheme 2022: Seva Nidhi package

Under the Agneepath scheme, the government has introduced the Seva Nidhi package for the Agniveers. After 4 years when the Agnivesh will be discharged from the Indian arms forces, the Corpus of 5.02 lakhs will be matched by the government of India and an amount of 11 lakhs with accrued interest will be given to Agniveers. If the Agniveers are selected for further service the Seva Nidhi package will be paid to them which will comprise only their contribution including accrued interest. If there is a case where the Agniveer exits the service before the end of the four-year service program on their request the Seva Nidhi package will be paid with the applicable rate of interest accumulated as of the date and there will be no contribution from the government to that Seva Nidhi package.

Agneepath scheme 2022: Salary

Under the Agneepath scheme 2022, the Agniveers will get a customized monthly package which will increase from the first year to the fourth year of service in the Indian armed forces. For the first year of the service, the Agni Veer will get a 30000 customized monthly salary from which 30% will be contributed to the save energy and the net in-hand salary will be 21000 rupees. GSAT-24, an Indian Communication Satellite successfully launched by ISRO from Kourou, French Guiana

NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) launched GSAT-24, following the space reforms leasing the entire satellite’s capacity to Direct-to-Home (DTH) service provider Tata Play. This was the company’s first “demand-driven” communication satellite mission. The satellite, developed by the Indian Space Research Organization for NSIL, was successfully launched into geostationary orbit from Kourou in French Guiana by the Ariane 5 rocket (South America).

  • GSAT-24 is a 4180 kg 24-Ku band communication satellite that provides pan-India coverage for DTH application requirements.

  • The commercial arm of ISRO, NSIL was established in March 2019 and is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Department of Space (DOS).

  • NSIL was required to carry out operational satellite missions on a “demand driven” model as part of the “space reforms” announced by the government in June 2020.

  • Under this model, NSIL is responsible for building, launching, owning, and operating satellites as well as providing services to its devoted customer.

  • The 15-year mission life of GSAT-24 is configured on ISRO’s tried-and-true I-3k Bus.

  • To suit the needs of its devoted customer Tata Play, the DTH division of the Tata Group, the whole satellite capacity on board GSAT-24 will be leased.
