During the inauguration of the International Museum Expo 2023 at Pragati Maidan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized his government’s commitment to safeguarding India’s heritage. However, he regretted that insufficient efforts were taken towards this cause following Independence.

PM Modi highlighted the issue of trafficking of ancient Indian art and antiques and noted that other countries are now returning items belonging to Indian heritage as India’s status in the world continues to rise.
The Prime Minister also revealed plans to build ten special museums commemorating the tribal community’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle, and stressed that the destruction of the country’s written and unwritten heritage during the period of slavery was not just India’s loss but a loss for the whole world.
PM Modi encouraged individuals, households, schools and institutions to make preserving historical artifacts a part of their nature by creating their own museums.
The expo is part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav‘ and is being held to celebrate the 47th International Museum Day (IMD).
During the program, PM Modi also inaugurated a virtual walkthrough of the upcoming national museum at North Block and South Block.
International Museum Expo 2023: Theme
The theme for IMD this year is “museums, sustainability, and well-being.” The expo aims to initiate a comprehensive dialogue on museums with professionals that will help them develop as cultural centres contributing greatly to India’s cultural diplomacy.

At the event, the International Museum Expo mascot was presented by Modi, which is an updated version of the wooden dancing girl in the Chennapatnam art style.
Additionally, PM Modi revealed a graphic novel called “A day at the Museum,” a directory of Indian museums, a pocket map of Kartavya Path, and a set of museum cards.
Graphic Novel:
The graphic novel tells the story of children who visit the National Museum and learn about the various job opportunities available in museums. The pocket map highlights cultural spaces and institutions and delves into the history of the Kartavya Path. The museum cards are illustrated with iconic museum facades across India and contain brief information about each one.

Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and senior advocate KV Viswanathan will be sworn in as Supreme Court judges, after the Central government cleared the appointment of the advocates. Their names were recommended to the Centre by the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.
Who is KV Viswanathan?
KV Viswanathan is a senior advocate who has practiced in the Supreme Court for over 30 years. He has appeared in a wide range of cases, including constitutional law, criminal law, and commercial law. He is also a member of the Bar Council of India and the Supreme Court Bar Association.
Who is Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra?
Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra is the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He was appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2013 and elevated as its Chief Justice in 2021. He has also served as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.
The five-member Collegium said the Supreme Court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges and is currently functioning with 32. Two Supreme Court judges – Dinesh Maheshwari and MR Shah – retired recently. Four more vacancies are going to arise by the second week of July and the working strength of judges will further come down, the collegium noted as it recommended the names of Viswanathan and Mishra.
